Corporate tactics which develop the engineering resource pool

There is a shortage of engineers, in both the number of college students majoring in engineering and the number that then stay in engineering. This shortage has serious implications for the future since interest in physical science is declining. There are many things, in both its external and internal environments, that industry can do to help alleviate the shortage of engineers. First, companies can take the initiative to introduce the engineering field to grade school children. Many companies have set up computer labs, tutoring sessions, and speakers' networks, all aimed at breaking down the barriers which prevent youngsters from pursuing maths and science. While the goals of these presentations is to encourage young girls, through having women engineers as presenters and role models, the boys in the class receive the benefit of the presentations as well. Another way in which companies can alleviate the engineer shortage is by considering what they can do to retain employees selected from the engineering resource pool.<>
