Modeling and analysis of supervisory control tasks in wastewater management

This paper describes a methodology to evaluate supervisory control tasks in a highly automated, wastewater management system. Data from field studies were used to develop related models of operator functions in cognitively demanding tasks. The field studies revealed the complex hierarchy and heterarchy associated with the supervision an advanced automated system. This paper describes the wastewater management system, discusses field studies and operator function models. This paper also discusses implications of modeling results for display design and decision aids to support human interaction in these tasks.
