Engineering education with new enabling technologies

This article deals with the use of enabling technologies for adapting engineering education to the Information Age. First it briefly presents the various issues of the 21st century Higher Engineering Education environment. The emphasis is on learning rather than teaching. The article presents shortcomings and advantages of the enabling technologies for educational use. The hyperlearning model, as well as the virtual classroom and university are discussed. An overview of the CSUN Web project of homepage development for courses is given. A framework for a virtual course is then presented. The article concludes by emphasizing that the enabling technologies are only tools, but here to stay, thus we should make good use of their capabilities to enhance learning.
