Development of new insulation system for use in oil-filled transformers

Attempting to overcome the shortcomings of the cellulose insulation, insulation manufacturers have evaluated a variety of materials to potentially replace cellulose. At present, Nomex aramid paper is the most widely accepted replacement material. The product's advantages are high temperature properties. While it is suitable for use up to 220/spl deg/C, other components, most notably the mineral oil, cannot be used at that temperature. In an effort to find a more suitable insulator material than the kraft or aramid papers for use in an oil filled transformer, various polymers and composite materials are evaluated.
