Channel shadowing considerations for fixed wireless access schemes

This paper examines the consequences of the statistical distribution of shadowing loss in the case of comparatively low base station antennas, and particularly in the case of fixed wireless access systems. The log-normal distribution typically assumed for the mobile case is justified, and arguments presented for the standard deviation to be a function of distance. The correlation in the shadowing loss to different base stations is then considered, and the effects quantized in terms of typical interference levels. Results show that consideration of the correlations in shadowing losses has a significant impact on the choice of a power control scheme.
