Availability and maintenance considerations in telecommunications network design and the use of simulation tools

The authors propose a methodology for integrating availability and maintenance considerations into telecommunications network design. They note that the network designers should consider reliability and maintainability considerations from the conceptualization of the network, as this will determine availability during the eventual operation of the network. An example of applying RAMS (reliability, maintainability, and availability) modeling to a private switched network is discussed. The relationship between QOS trafficability objectives and the associated RAMS characteristics is pointed out. Due to the computational complexity for larger networks, simulation is a prerequisite tool in both instances. The use of simulation throughout the project life cycle is shown. A brief overview is given of types of simulation tools, covering general simulation languages as well as products which focus on specific areas of telecommunications only.
