Multi protocol over ATM: application to OASICE project

The ATM (asynchronous transfer mode) removes the distinction between LAN, MAN and WAN. Given the installed LANs, a key to ATM success is the ability to allow interoperability between existing LAN and ATM networks. The multi protocol over ATM (MPOA) separates the two main functions of traditional routers: route computation (by the route server) and packet forwarding (edge devices). The routing and switching functionalities are separated, therefore MPOA gives layer 2 (efficacy and simplicity) and layer 3 (security and filtration) advantages.
