Reed-Solomon error control coding in multichannel FSK coherent lightwave systems

(n,k) Reed-Solomon codes can effectively reduce the impact of laser phase noise and relax the required optimum IF expansion bandwidth in a dual-filter FSK optical communication system. The coding gain increases as the channel separation is reduced, and the error probability floor can be eliminated. The required IF expansion bandwidth and sensitivity can be reduced substantially as the coding gain predominates.
