Polarization diversity for indoor cellular and PCS CDMA reception

Cross-polarization coupling in the indoor channel may be exploited using polarization diversity to mitigate the harmful effects of scattering and the random orientation of a portable phone. Experiments were conducted at both cellular and PCS frequencies to compare the performance of polarization diversity to spatial diversity and three non-diversity antenna cases. These tests utilized the 1.25 MHz CDMA waveform. Our experiments demonstrated that receive diversity is important for achieving optimum CDMA capacity and coverage in the indoor environment. The results indicate that polarization diversity is equivalent to spatial diversity in the indoor CDMA environment.
