Abstract:

This paper proposes an alternative to the problem of finding optimal paths in public transportation networks. The authors present a system architecture that has been implemented on the bus system in Boston using their new solution and completed for mobile devices. On user's request the system proposes an optimal path to a destination and provides with alerts during the journey. To the best of their knowledge, it is the first planning system with the ability to respond to route updates in real-time. If there are changes due to user's errors (user misses a bus, etc.) or service delays, an updated or a new route is offered.
