Achievable throughput of multicarrier-based multipoint-to-point networks using a reservation-based channel access protocol

This paper introduces a simple reservation-based channel access protocol to control transmissions by multicarrier-based remote terminals on a shared channel. An analysis of the achievable throughput using this protocol shows that increasing the number of subchannels into which a frequency band is divided results in improved throughput when the offered load exceeds some critical value, although the maximum achievable throughput decreases slightly as the number of subchannels is increased. The results suggest that the throughput of networks intended to support bursty applications can be improved significantly by using multicarrier-based remote units controlled by a reservation-based protocol.
