A comparison of two systems for down link communication with antenna arrays at the base

We compare the performance of the down-link part of two systems employing antenna arrays at the bases. One of the systems uses a 1/3 channel reuse pattern but also reuses the channels three times within each cell. The other systems reuses all channels in all cells 1/1, but does not reuse channels within a cell. Thus, the maximum number of users in the two systems are equal. In order to account for the increased interference, the 1/3 system directs the antenna pattern nulls against the same cell co-channel users while the 1/1 system directs nulls against the co-channel users in other cells. The performance of the two systems are compared as a function of the azimuth angular width (seen from the base) of the multipaths generated at the mobile. The result indicates that with efficient power control, inter-cell handover and synchronization the 1/1 system has a better performance than the 1/3 system.
