Handover and macro diversity for 3rd generation mobile systems within ATM fixed networks

The target is to integrate future 3rd generation mobile systems (UMTS) and broadband integrated services digital networks (B-ISDN) by using UMTS service specific protocols over the radio interface. In future mobile systems ATM switching must be able to support the requirements of seamless handover and macro diversity for a wide range of user services including voice, data, video, TCP/IP and multimedia. Such requirements might be provided as enhancements to B-ISDN and ATM standards or included within separate UMTS specific equipment in the form of mobility servers. Techniques for the support of handover and macro diversity are developed for TDMA and CDMA examples of possible UMTS radio interfaces.
