Design and implementation of an ultra low power wireless neuro-stimulator system

Long term Behavioral and neurophysiological studies of freely moving animals require a wireless portable low power neurostimulator which can provide precisely controllable input(s) to the nervous system. In this paper, we have reported design of a long range, wireless neuro-stimulat or for electrical stimulation of central nervous system, optimized to consume ultra low power and therefore suitable for long-term neurophysiological studies on freely moving animals. The system consists of two parts: (1) a programmable remote controller and, (2) a back-pack current stimulator. The controller provides a simple interface to configure the stimulus pulse and stimulation pattern parameters, and wirelessly controls the back-pack. The stimulator can deliver programmed trains of monophasic or biphasic current pulses up to ±2mA, and its total power consumption is only 5.1mW. Therefore the system is ideal for long-term neural stimulation, while it is flexible enough to be used in different applications of electrical stimulation of centeral nerve system (CNS).
