An introduction to large scale buoyant energy storage technology

With increasing use of intermittent renewable energy sources, the importance of large scale energy storage has become apparent. This paper identifies a novel method of using large buoyant elements to store energy deep under the surface of the ocean and the research plan to move it towards commercialization. A prototype design and test methodology is introduced as well as a large scale optimization methodology that will serve to streamline the integration of such a system into Hawaii's island-grid infrastructure.
