Capacity loss due to polarization effects in coherent optical systems

Optical fiber channels are investigated with respect to channel capacity. Singular value decomposition based estimation of SNR penalties due to PDL predicts high losses. In contrast, the capacity based approach yields distinctly lower values relevant along with polarization-time coding.
