Advanced fuel cell solution for telecommunications network - results from global field installations

In the recent years, we have witnessed a tremendous growth in telecom networks around the world. Most of this growth is occurring in deployment of wireless networks in the emerging markets, where the power grid is not as reliable. Typically batteries and diesel generators are used to provide power backup in these applications. Both these technologies have substantial operational and maintenance costs, in addition to significant impact on the environment. It is estimated that most of the new growth in wireless subscribers will come from rural areas in developing countries where access to electricity is either non-existent or intermittent. This paper will address the application of an advanced hydrogen fuel cell solution for providing backup power in wireless and wireline networks. The total cost of ownership of this fuel cell solution is cost competitive with existing power backup technologies of batteries and diesel generators. This power backup solution provides industry leading power density and efficiency, with telecom grade reliability and durability. Other features include fast response time and the ability to increase power backup capacity on the same footprint. Remote monitoring is also included in the solution to track site power consumption, grid outages, and fuel consumption for automatic scheduling of hydrogen delivery. Besides providing significant performance and operational benefits, the solution offers the ability to integrate telecommunications electronics in a singe enclosure, thereby significantly reducing site footprint and energy expenses. This innovative solution has been trialed by various operators around the world with great success.
