An overview of modern PWM techniques for three-phase, voltage-controlled, voltage-source inverters

An overview of modern PWM techniques for three-phase, voltage-controlled, voltage-source inverters is presented. Five classes are distinguished: (1) modulating-function techniques, (2) voltage space-vector techniques, (3) programmed and quasi-programmed techniques, (4) feedback and quasi-feedback techniques, and (5) random techniques. Underlying principles and general characteristics of each class are briefly described. It is stressed that a practical high-performance PWM technique must offer a sensible tradeoff between the often conflicting technical requirements.
