Broadband access in multimedia communications for LAN environment

This paper discusses broadband access to the desktop in a LAN environment and adaptive signal processing techniques for high bit-rate data transmission over unshielded twisted pair of category 3 (UTP-3 in the USA) in the LAN environment. ATM LAN and fast Ethernet physical layer interface transceivers are able to transmit at up to 155 Mbps over 100 m UTP-3 cables for broadband access to office desktop and home digital video. To overcome the propagation loss, near end cross talk (NEXT) interference and to meet the EM emission requirement, advanced signaling and adaptive signal processing are essential to achieve high bit-rate data transmission over UTP-3 cable.
