Induction of fuzzy rules for air traffic control

Induced fuzzy rules containing fuzzy premise facts are used to decide how long an aircraft must wait before entering an airport approach corridor. An aircraft may need to wait if it is close to an aircraft ahead in the corridor or has an airspeed that is greater than the aircraft ahead. Adaptive rule strength modification is used to optimize airport performance in terms of wait times in queues, turnaways, and potential collisions. The results reveal that the induced/adapted fuzzy airport control rules perform better than the nonlinear algorithm used to provide the training set of cases.
