An overview of impulse and self-heterodyne 60-GHz systems for hybrid networks based on polymer multimode fibres

Two alternatives to Single Mode Fibre (SMF) 60-GHz Radio-Over-Fibre (RoF) fully MMIC systems are proposed in this paper: the first one is based on a Intermediary Frequency (IF) over fibre topology : an IF signal is transmitted over a Polymer MultiMode Fibre (PMMF). The access points assuming the optical/electrical conversion include a self-heterodyne topology to perform the 60-GHz Radio-Frequency (RF) link. The second alternative concerns an impulse system: sub-nanosecond pulses modulate the intensity of a distributed feedback laser operating at 1300nm (baseband over fibre topology). After photodetection, these pulses modulate the amplitude of a 60-GHz carrier to perform the RF link. These two systems are tested and experimental results are presented.
