Abstract:

The paper presents a computer model for a series hybrid transit bus including representations of its vehicular dynamics, power-electronic drive, electric motors, energy storage, and other mechanical components. The model is validated using fuel consumption data obtained from tests on an actual hybrid bus. The validated model is then used for the study of the impact of the driving patterns on the expected fuel economy of the vehicle. The results quantify how erratic driving patterns will contribute to decreased fuel efficiency; the simulation model is also a useful tool for training the drivers of newly developed hybrid transit vehicles.
