UPT implementation in a CS1 network environment

While personal communications services are being implemented in various ways, there are advantages in migrating to a common environment. This paper considers how the CCITT Universal Personal Telecommunication (UPT) service may be implemented within the CCITT Intelligent Network Capability Set 1 (CS1) environment. There will be strong incentives to do this form from a standardization, feature evolution, and network interworking point of view, once CS1 is available and UPT is fully defined. The basic characteristics of UPT and CS1 are reviewed, and a number of key implementation aspects are examined. The manner in which UPT may be implemented using the service independent building blocks provided by CS1 is illustrated, and the extent to which CS1 supports the currently defined UPT features is identified. Options and issues associated with the overall network structure are discussed, and an appropriate UPT network architecture is proposed. Also discussed is the evolution from a near-term non-CS1 environment to the longer-term full CS1 environment.
