Sustainable mobility - Cost-effective and zero emission integration of Germany's EV fleet

Electric vehicles (EVs) offer the possibility of electrical energy storage within the power grid on low voltage level. By means of controlled off-peak charging of the EVs' batteries, it is thus possible to cover the power demand of several million EVs without the need for additional power plant capacities. In effect, electricity can thus be supplied at a very cost-effective rate. A simulation of Germany's power plant mix provides a breakdown of each power plant's deployment pattern, including all costs for specifically charging EVs. Additional electricity feed-in from renewable energy sources, however, plays a negligible role in the charging mix of EVs. A genuine zero emission integration of Germany's EV fleet is termed possible by capping all additional CO₂ emissions resulting from EVs. A considerable price hike for CO₂ emission credits has then to be taken into account. Sustainable mobility is a viable option for Germany's ambitious intention of reducing CO₂ emissions.
