Compression of bathymetric data using wavelets

The compression of bathymetric data using three different types of wavelet transforms as well as the discrete cosine transform (DCT) is considered. The various compression schemes are then compared with respect to the compression ratios achieved, computational complexity, and accuracy of reproduction. The results indicate that the wavelet transforms can yield higher compression ratios than the DCT. Further, these transforms offer reduced computational complexity relative to the DCT.
