Enhancements of bi-level coding for seismic waveform compression

In this paper, we overview a two-stage lossless waveform coding scheme and propose a new method for finding optimum coding parameters of bi-level coding or modified run-length coding, which decomposes a multi-variable optimization problem to one-variable optimization, thereby avoiding the associated time inefficiency of trial solution. We also propose variable block lengths and improved predictor order selection. It has been shown that although the improvement of the compression ratio using our coding parameter optimization is modest, the computation time is more than 10 times faster. The compression performance is presented using a seismic data base from USGS Albuquerque Seismic Laboratory.
