Camera detection, classification, and positioning of vehicles on a multi-lane road

The authors report on the development of a wide-angle camera for the detection, classification, and positioning of vehicles on a multi-lane road, inside the detection zone of an electronic road pricing system. By using a laboratory road model with toy cars and a colour CCD camera with associated image processing software they are able to count correctly the number of vehicles and determine their lane positions.
