Operational characteristics of transportable in-building propagation

Spurred on by the quest for a personal communications system (PCS), portable in-building propagation has been the subject of many published articles and conference presentations. However, while in-building fields have been well characterized, little attention has been paid to the time variation of signal levels for subscriber units under operational circumstances. The paper presents results for transportable devices such as laptop computers and examines the potential benefits of diversity reception. Block error rate equations are developed for various modulation schemes in both Rayleigh and lognormal fading.
