A cellular base station phased array antenna system

The performance capabilities of a base station phased array antenna in a frequency division multiple access (FDMA) cellular mobile-communications environment are investigated. The performance capabilities of utilizing a base station phased array antenna are improved cochannel interference, regulated fading via scanning, decreased transmitter power, and higher system capacity. The proposed based station antenna is formed by spacing the radiating elements around a cylinder to provide a 360/spl deg/ scanning capability. By feeding each of the radiating elements with the appropriate channel dependent phase shift, narrow beams can be activated to simultaneously track and communicate with multiple mobile users. Multipath fading can be improved by dithering the beam around the mobile, resulting in a form of scanning diversity.
