Phase sweeping transmitter diversity in mobile communications

In mobile communications, multipath fading can severely degrade the performance. A diversity technique called phase sweeping transmitter diversity (PSTD) was introduced to mitigate the effects of slow fading common to many mobile wireless systems. We present a thorough study of the PSTD system combined with binary convolutional codes with coherent and differentially coherent PSK transmission. We find the performance using PSTD significantly improves over that without PSTD on a slow Rayleigh fading channel especially in the coherent detection case. Comparisons of results with existing diversity techniques are also given. The issue of power spectrum broadening and combined bit interleaving are also discussed.
