The inclusion of distribution automation in power systems curricula

The author describes a research project on updating the traditional curricula of power systems courses. The Substation Controller project is reported as an example of fruitful academy-industry cooperation. The main features of a lab prototype are described, and an example of a typical experience is presented concerning a new supervision function in real-time protective relays. This experience is an example of how new technology can be included in power systems courses, combining advanced microprocessor applications with very specific knowledge about power systems operation and helping to update curricula and to attract students.<>
