Adaptive state allocation in MLSE for Rayleigh fading channels

Maximum likelihood sequence estimation (MLSE) using an adaptive state allocation (ASA) algorithm for detecting signals transmitted over Rayleigh fading channels is proposed. Though MLSE is an optimal scheme, its computational complexity limits the application. The ASA algorithm is a suboptimal receiver whose performance is close to that of the MLSE with greatly reduced computational complexity. Adaptive partitioning is used in this algorithm by measuring the short-term received signal power. Also with an adaptive threshold selected based on the Chernoff distance, only a few states of the trellis diagram are chosen as the most likely correct states in the ASA algorithm.
