0.14THz high power millimeter wave generation from a relativistic surface wave oscillator

The results of numerical simulation and experimental investigation of a large cross section, high power THz SWO was presented in this paper. This device can be driven by an electron beam of a moderate voltage, which is an important feature for practical uses. It is concluded that an overmoded SWO must support surface waves that are synchronous with the electron beam, and simultaneously exhibit large values of the coupling impedance. The characteristics of surface wave and “π” point operation are crucial to avoid the mode competition. Effects of various operating parameters on the device behavior were investigated, and finally a set of optimal values were achieved. Under the condition of 370kV incident voltage, the output power level above 40 MW was obtained at the frequency of around 0.143THz.
