Platform effect on RFID tag antennas and co-design considerations

In practical applications, the performance of RFID systems is subject to the environment of specific application scenario. Since RFID tags are always affixed to objects with widely varying size and material composition, the performance, especially the impedance of the tag antenna is severely affected by those objects such as metal and lossy material. Besides developing platform tolerant tag antenna, the co-design methodology is also promising and useful to solve such problems. The example has proved that the reading range of the RFID system can be greatly enhanced by using co-designed tag antennas.
