Electrical characterization of eye lens

The impedance of goat eye lenses was studied in the extremely low frequency range (10 mHz-10 Hz) using a computer controlled AC impedance system. The Cole-Cole plot of the eye lens was drawn between the real and imaginary components of the impedance (Z) for each excitation frequency. The plot showed a perfect semicircular arc with its center lying below the abscissa at an angle of 35/spl deg/. Using a graphical analysis of the Cole-Cole plot, the distribution factor, characteristic frequency and capacitance of the eye lens were calculated. An attempt has also been made in the present study to measure the resultant current after applying a DC voltage from 0-100 mV. The observed electrical parameters were then used to explain the multiple current paths through the lens. The observed data on the impedance of the eye lens was analyzed on the basis of a possible solid state mechanism.
