Active control strategies for tall civil structures

Environmental forces, like wind and earthquakes, induce motion in tall civil structures. To mitigate these vibrations, an active control scheme is built into the structure. In this paper, various control strategies are compared with respect to their effectiveness, efficiency, and implementability. The control techniques that are considered include proportional control, optimal LQR control, variable-structure control, neural network control, and adaptive fuzzy control. The effect of using a linear and a nonlinear model of the system is also investigated. Numerical simulations are performed for a building equipped with a tuned mass damper. Both wind and earthquake excitations are considered in the study.
