Alternative concepts and architectures for satellite control

The current satellite control structure for DoD and other US Government space systems consists of multiple systems with varying levels of interconnection and interoperability. As we move into an era of tighter fiscal constraints, the old way of doing business is no longer prudent. Technology advances permit new control concepts that were not feasible when today's systems were developed. One of several resulting initiatives was the Future Integrated Telemetry, Tracking, and Commanding Architecture Study (FITAS) conducted by USSPACECOM in response to Joint Staff and OASD(C3I) tasking. As an activity designed to support its follow-on enduring satellite control evolution process, USSPACECOM is conducting a study of alternative future control concepts. This paper presents the study methodology, the key architectural drivers, and the alternatives considered.
