A Modular Power Conditioning System for Computer Power Protection

The advent of smaller computer systems which consume less power has prompted a reevaluation of power protection. This paper addresses a new power equipment development which combines power protection and power distribution into a single modular unit. This paper presents statistical data regarding power problems and the types of power protection currently being implemented for new generation computers. The use of solid-state, uninterruptible power supply systems cannot be justified for all critical applications. Unique application of a rotary power conditioning system, with outage protection up to 500 milliseconds, is presented in detail. For loads up to 50 kva the motor generator set, power distribution panelboard and power monitoring system can be combined in a single portable package. Operating and performance characteristics for this system are described. The economics of power protection are presented in light of the rapidly declining cost of computer systems. The actual costs of different degrees of power protection are examined.
