Design issues for high power factor AC-DC converter systems

Critical design issues for high-power-factor rectifier (HPFR) systems are discussed for AC-DC power converters with discontinuous input currents. The system contains a modular AC-DC power converter that consists of two parallel discontinuous mode flyback converters which drive a DC-DC regulated power converter. The latter provides a constant power load to the AC-DC power converter. Inequalities are given that facilitate the design of the HPFR input filter. A useful model of the closed-loop system that provides a different perspective of HPFR system design. The design criteria are verified on a working experimental prototype.<>
