The use of a kinestatic charge detector for human bone mineral densitometry

A 2016 channel kinestatic charge detector has been built at the University of Tennessee (UT) which allows dual-energy bone mineral densitometry images to be acquired of a 40/spl times/40 cm field at 0.2 mm resolution in about 1 second. The high X-ray quantum efficiency of the detector combined with the low noise of the 2016 channel data acquisition system allows high accuracy and high resolution to be achieved at only modest dose. Bone density measurements have just commenced with the full field detector this month, and bone densitometry images of an inanimate calibration phantom and a frozen 4.7 kg turkey have been acquired so far.<>
