NATO internetworking: OSI or TCP/IP

The focus of this paper is on North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) standards with emphasis on transport and network layer standards. It addresses both the work in NATO standards bodies as well as implementations in testbeds and prototype systems. Although primarily oriented on NATO activities, it also describes the use of transport and network layer standards in the European commercial environment. The standards activities in NATO and the European Community, and the implementation of actual systems are discussed. The main conclusion is that TCP/IP will continue to be the dominant transport and network layer protocols used in Europe (and the rest of the world) for LAN/WAN internetworking.<>
