Robust stability control of power systems based on WAMs

A wide-area adaptive supervisory controller (WAASC) to enhance the damping of inter-area oscillations of multi-machine power systems using Wide Area Measurement system (WAMs) is proposed. A damping controller based on the mixed-sensitivity linear matrix inequality (LMI) approach with pole-placement restriction is designed. WAASC uses the input information from located Phase Measurement Units (PMU) in the system and dispatches supplementary control signals to the available local controllers. The design of WAASC is explained in detail and balanced truncation technology is used to reduce the orders of the original model and the controller. Its performance is validated by time domain simulations on a 4-machine 2-area test system.
