Mode solvers and mode expansion methods for integrated photonics

Principles of mode solvers for straight and circularly bent waveguides based on mode matching are briefly reviewed. Next, the principles of a bi-directional mode expansion propagation scheme based on harmonic expansion are presented and its performance assessed in comparison with some other approaches.
