Mathematical models of human middle ear in chronic otitis media

Mathematical structural models of a middle ear were simulated and calculated by finite-element method (FEM) to examine hearing loss of otitis media with perforation, adhesive otitis media and compared with a normal ear. Calculated results showed that structural disorder of the middle ear caused maximum 15 dB-hearing loss; remaining hearing loss is caused by disorder of middle ear components which moderate middle ear pressure regulation. Based on mentioned results, a treatment method by using low- power semiconductor laser was proposed and it was clinically tested in order to treat chronic otitis media.
