Simulation of Tape Flying Characteristics on VTR Drum Considering In-Plane Stress

A simulation study by FEM of the deformation of magnetic tape above the VTR drum has been carried out to investigate the tape flying characteristics. Reynolds' equation and the deformation equations of the tape are solved, taking into account the in-plane stress (i.e. geometrical nonlinearity). The validity of this simulation is checked by comparison with the experimental data. Simulations yielded the following results: 1) the flow of lubricant air from the head window causes the tape to depress; 2) the depression grows larger above the rear of the window; and 3) the depression becomes deep and long with increases in the length of the head window.
