Integrated Filter Elements in Electric Drives

There are opportunities in electric drives for integration of filter elements. Integration can consist of utilizing existing the magnetic material for an input inductor, or using the rotor inertia for power filtering. Though integration, mass or cost, or both can be reduced. This could be particularly important for vehicular applications. An integrated inductor design is done using magnetic equivalent circuits and examined with finite element analysis. Rotor inertia is used to displace electrical passive components and thereby reduce the filter requirements of the dc-link capacitor. This is shown in permanent magnet synchronous machine drive simulation.
