Remote device management of WiMAX devices in multi-mode multi-access environment

The consumer demand for high bandwidth network services is on the rise. The service providers are planning to fulfill this demand with deployment of next generation broadband networks offering a large variety of new and complex devices. To manage the multitude of complex devices remotely becomes an increasingly challenging task for service providers, requiring well-designed standardized device management frameworks. Remote device management standardization efforts are well underway in various standards bodies to address this issue. These standards allow service providers / enterprise to remotely and cost-effectively support policy-based auto-configuration, software download, monitoring, diagnosing, and event fault detection & recovery. This paper will provide the current standards landscape of two widely deployed device management standards, and describe how these differing standards were leveraged for WiMAX to address the management of a wide array of devices. In addition, this paper will present insights about future trends in remote device management, outline a proposed approach for 3GPP LTE device management, as well as discuss Motorola's converged device management solution.
