Surge arresters in composite housings - new developments and long term experiences

This paper provides an overview of the development of surge arresters in composite housings and their use in practical applications for over 15 years, as well as additional information on the latest results of continuous R&D-activities. The design of the housing has been adapted to the arrester's characteristics, particularly with respect to the pressure relief capability, which is extremely important. These developments have resulted in surge arresters that can meet the most stringent requirements for a broad spectrum of applications - from transformer substations, to HVDC and FACTS systems to railway applications. The use of silicone as the outside insulating material guarantees the perfect combination of extremely high mechanical strength and optimal dielectric properties. These trendsetting technical characteristics and their benefits for customers have been verified in comprehensive laboratory tests and have proven their value in a wide range of application areas the world over for more than fifteen years.
