Ultra Giant Vesicles out of a Planar Membrane

We report a method for forming ultra giant lipid vesicles. A chip device with a micro-jet nozzle was fabricated. The vesicles were produced by applying pulsed micro jets to a planar lipid bilayer, analogous to blowing soap bubbles from a liquid film. Using this method, lipid vesicles with diameters of about 500 μm were formed one-by-one. This method enables the encapsulation of target molecules or nano particles into the vesicles rapidly and efficiently.
