Electromechanical and Time-Domain Modeling of Wind Generators

This paper describes the development of electromechanical and time-domain models for a wind generator. The models may be modified in a straightforward manner to simulate the behavior of a wide range of wind generators operating in different conditions. The electromechanical and time-domain models are used for cross validation. Both squirrel-cage and wound-rotor induction generators are modeled. Direct-connect operation and islanded operation (including disconnection from the grid and self-excited operation) are also modeled. Analyses for fixed-speed and partial variable-speed operation are presented. The main purpose of this endeavor is the development of a system that is able to model commercially available turbines accurately. Schemes to maximize efficiency of a wind generator may be tested on the model and their effectiveness evaluated before they are implemented.
